COMPARE KAUAI'S AVERAGE DAILY VISITORS TO OTHER ISLANDS

The 2000 Visitor census shows us why Kauai was least effected by the Sept. 11th tragedy

By Justin Britt

By looking at the table below, you can see that Kauai has had the lowest amount of visitors over the last three years compared to all other counties. You will also notice that Oahu relies heavily on International tourism, which accounted for nearly 40% of its total daily visitors in 2000--more than any other island. The heavy slow down in Oahu's tourism since September 11, 2001 can be attributed to the reliance on international visitors as the Japanese continue to pass up international flights to Hawaii.

On the other hand, Kauai's International Visitors account for only 9.9% of our tourism. We are fortunate that our visitor industry is doing so well in the economic down turn. I think I speak for everyone when I say, "I pray that this good fortune continues".

It will be interesting to see 2001's Average Daily Visitor Census (see the 2001 info). Visit back soon, I will be posting the results shortly after they are released. We will then be able to determine the true affect of the horrific terrorist attack that occurred this year. I predict that Kauai will be less affected then one would suspect.
