LIHUE The County’s Wastewater Division is awaiting results of water samples taken at Port Allen to determine if waters were contaminated by a sewage spill last evening. A pump that failed to activate at the Eleele Wastewater Treatment Plant apparently caused the spill. Security guards at Port Allen discovered the spill at around 9:15 p.m. and alerted KPD dispatch. Wastewater personnel were immediately sent to the scene. The pump was manually activated and the spill was contained. It is not known at this time how much sewage was spilled.
Small boat traffic and fisherman are advised to avoid the waters off the pier at Port Allen until test results, which are due late tomorrow afternoon, are revealed and the Department of Health declares the water safe.
