Sierra Club Endorsements

August 29, 2002

by: Sierra Club

STATE CAPITOL — The Sierra Club, Hawai`i Chapter—the state’s largest grassroots advocacy organization—is endorsing Ed Case for Governor. The decision came after recent interviews with Case and gubernatorial candidates Mazie Hirono and Linda Lingle. The Sierra Club cited Case’s record in opposing sprawl, protecting agricultural land, supporting the bottle bill and sponsoring renewable energy legislation.

Case has made it clear that environmental protection should be elevated to a core government function. As Case explains in his vision statement, “This is not only a matter of funding priority, but also of preserving undeveloped natural resources as they are.”

The Sierra Club believes Ed Case has the right environmental vision and has made it clear that environmental protection should be a core government function. Case said his priorities as governor would be preservation of agriculture and conservation lands from sprawl development, guarding against alien species and development of renewable energy sources.

"We're all stewards of our land. We all have an obligation to take care of our land and hand it off to the next generation," Case said. "We're just passing through. The land lives for those generations that come after us."

Democrat Hermina Morita (14 – N. Kauai), was the lead advocate behind the bottle bill last session, as well as initiatives to encourage more clean energy in the state.

The Sierra Club’s endorsement process involved sending detailed surveys out to the candidates, interviewing many of them, and reviewing their records. All endorsements received at least a two-thirds vote of two Sierra Club bodies in order to be approved.

You'll read this in The Garden Island newspaper on Thurssday:

Patsy Mink for U.S. Congress District 2, Mina Mortita for State House District 14, Gary Hooser for State Senate, and Ron Kouchi for Mayor of Kaua`i are endorsed by the Sierra Club.

The Sierra Club will make endorsements for Kaua`i County Council candidates for the General Election only. Seven candidates will be selected for endorsement from among the top vote getters in the Primary Election from the following nine County Council candidates: Kaipo Asing, Carol Bain, John Barretto, Ray Chuan, Jay Furfaro, Rhoda Libre, Anne Punohu, Ken Stokes and JoAnn Yukimura.
