Kauai Helicopters

So my Mom visited me recently from Los Angeles, and she really wanted to do some sightseeing of Waimea Canyon and Na Pali Coast. “Sure, no problem” was my first response, I love both those places. Then she told me she wanted to see these places from a helicopter. All of a sudden I wasn’t too thrilled about the idea and I have two very good reasons:

  1. There have been so many Kauai helicopter crashes in the past few years.
  2. It seems like their are so many helicopters buzzing over Haena that I don’t really want to support the problem.

After some research, I found out that there is one helicopter tour company responsible for all the recent commercial based crashes. DO NOT FLY with HeliUSA. This is a mainland tour operator who cuts corners, doesn’t know the local conditions, and it is evident by their safety record.

I was also informed by a Haena resident that it isn’t all the tour companies buzzing the North Shore. So, being the good son that I am, I set out to find a reputable Kauai helicopter tour company that would provide an unforgettable experience for my Mother and I.

That’s when I came across Safari Helicopters. Their safety record is impeccable and after speaking with them on the phone, they seemed like a good fit. And boy, we were’nt disappointed. From the minute we stepped into their office, the service was outstanding. Our pilot was knowledgable about the the different areas of the island he took us to and the tour was not only visually exciting, but also informative. Also, as somebody who is prone to motion sickness, the pilot flew the helicopter very gently and I didn’t have any problems, though I did take a motion sickness pill before the flight which I would highly recommend to anyone with similar issues.

All in all, I’d have to give the Kauai helicopter tour an A+. And as somebody who grew up on Kauai, I thought I knew my island pretty well. But if you haven’t seen Kauai from the air, you’re missing out!

I too am a Kauai resident and have been on a helicopter tour that knocked my socks off. I also have land that is near an interior waterfall on the island and have many helicopters flying over daily. I wish there was some regulation to how often they could fly over residential areas, or increase the minimum altitude they could fly at.
If you do take a tour on Kauai, please chose a responsible and conscientious company. I haven’t looked into for awhile, but like the writer of the article above, is sounds like Safari may be a good choice, but I really don’t know.
